It’s a big decision to hire a web designer to help you create your business website and we understand that being a business owner is a stressful job, so we thought it might be helpful to share some tips on how to provide feedback to your web designer.
No matter the situation, providing your opinion or constructive feedback to someone can be challenging, and that can be especially true when working with someone who is designing your website. The website may be for your business, but it’ll likely feel deeply personal to you, as it’s a reflection of your brand which YOU have dreamt into reality. Hopefully before you commit to hiring a web designer, you’ve done your research and asked all the right questions, and you feel confident in your choice. The right web designer will be open to your feedback because they’ll want to make sure you’re satisfied with the end result, but it doesn’t hurt to consider these tips for providing helpful feedback to ease the design process.
Look at Other Websites
Your designer likely has an amazing portfolio of websites they’ve built or redesigned that they’ve shared with you, but you can look elsewhere for inspiration too. Check out your local and national competitors. Note the look, the feel, the navigation, the function of each site – what do you like and what do you not like? Sharing a variety of websites with your web designer can help illustrate what you’re looking for, especially when you aren’t sure how to put it into words.
Avoid General Statements
Giving specific, concrete feedback is much more helpful than general feedback. Statements like “jazz it up” or “make it pop” could mean anything to anyone. Does “jazz it up” mean bigger and bolder fonts? Does that mean more vibrant colors should be added? Do you want flashy words or graphics to dance across the screen? Do you want a disco ball to come down and sprinkle glitter everywhere? Instead of saying, “it’s all wrong” or “I don’t like it,” be specific! What is wrong.. What don’t you like? The colors? The fonts? The photos? The lack of a disco ball!? Help your designer help you.
Put Your Audience First
Throughout the process, it’s important to keep your target market, or audience, in mind, and what you may personally like or dislike may not be best for your audience. If your web designer is experienced in other aspects of digital marketing, they are likely used to designing websites for the experience of the user. Often, that can mean they’ve incorporated SEO-friendly design elements that you may not understand. Definitely communicate with them what you like and dislike, but keep in mind that you may have to put some of your personal feelings about the design aside and trust that the design could be for the benefit of your audience which will ultimately help drive sales.
Focus on the Most Important Parts
When someone clicks to your website, you only have a few seconds to keep them there and to get your message across to your users. Every website should have these essential features, but consider – what is the main function or most important part of your website? Is it to get people to contact you via telephone or email? Is it so they shop online from your site? To learn about your services? To view your menu or locations? Your website, from the very first click, should serve its intended function. Instead of focusing on the minor details of your site, focus on the bigger picture – does the design of your site serve as a powerful marketing tool for what you need it to do?
Be Honest from the Start!
Part of being a designer is receiving feedback and getting critiqued. We can promise you, there’s never any hard feelings! If you feel that something has been overlooked or can be improved upon, speak up! And speak up sooner rather than later. It’s fairly simple to change things early in the design process but can become more complex (and more expensive) later on. Honest feedback, especially early on, can be crucial to the process – if something doesn’t seem right to you, say something.
