If you’re a business owner looking to build or redesign your company website, hopefully, you’ve done your research and asked all the right questions of your website developer, and you’ve probably noticed that at the top of the list of questions to ask is “What Content Management System (CMS) Do You Use?” While there are many options out there like Squarespace, Magento, Shopify, Joomla, Wix, Weebly, we typically prefer WordPress over all others.
*Note – as we write about WordPress, we are referring to WordPress.org, NOT WordPress.com, which is a different platform and can be great for beginners or those with personal or hobby blogs, but is not ideal for a business that needs to make money. As a business owner, WordPress.org is where you need to be!
The other Content Management Systems have their perks, especially depending on what kind of site your company needs. But overall, WordPress is typically the way to go and here’s why:
The Software is Free and Open-Source
WordPress is 100% free to download and use by anyone. All you’ll need is a domain name and web hosting, which is why it’s referred to self-hosted WordPress. Of course, a domain name and web hosting costs money, with hosting costing around $3 per month for the cheapest plans and a few hundred dollars for more expensive plans. There are optional premium plug-ins and themes to purchase, and if you really want a professional, well-functioning site for your business, it’s best to hire a professional web developer.
WordPress Sites Are Completely Customizable
As mentioned previously, WordPress offers an expansive amount of themes and plug-ins, which means your site is entirely customizable. There are thousands of free website templates or themes to choose from, and they’re easy to customize because WordPress allows you to change the colors, logos, backgrounds, and create sliders.. all of which can fit into your Brand Identity. With all of the plug-ins available (which are like apps), advanced features can be added to your site, such as analytics, contact forms, membership areas, etc. It also supports different media types so you can add more than just images – you can add audio and video files too, including embedding them from places like YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Soundcloud, etc. just by pasting the URL into the WordPress post editor.
WordPress Allows You To Create Any Type of Website
A common misconception about WordPress is that it’s solely designed for building blogs, but that’s definitely not the case anymore. WordPress allows for web developers to build almost any type of website to suit each unique company’s needs.
Here’s an extensive list:
- Business Websites
- Portfolios
- Forums
- E-Commerce Sites
- Auction Sites
- Membership Sites
- Chatrooms
- Galleries
- Job Boards
- Business Directories
- Q&A Sites
- Wikis and knowledge-bases
- Non-profits for collecting donations
- Media-Centric sites like YouTube
WordPress is SEO Friendly
It shouldn’t be any surprise that having a beautiful website means little if no one ever sees it; sites simply have to rank high on the search engine results pages (SERPs). WordPress sites are written using high-quality code and produces semantic markup… in non-geek terms, that means Google and other search engines love WordPress sites. So, WordPress sites tend to rank higher on the search engines right “out of the box.” Also, WordPress offers SEO plug-ins to further optimize it so it can rank even higher with search engines.
WordPress Websites Are Easy to Manage
When you hire a web developer to design your website, you should ask if they offer website management services as well. However, depending on your needs and own skills, you may be able to manage the upkeep of your site yourself, and WordPress makes it simple to do so. Just like your phone and apps you have downloaded, your website with its plugins will need to be backed up and updated frequently. So, WordPress comes with a built-in updates management system, which allows anyone to update their plug-ins and themes from their WordPress dashboard. And to protect data from hacking or accidents, there are WordPress backup plug-ins so you can automatically backup and store your site’s content on a remote location.
WordPress Is Secure
WordPress has developed with security in mind and is one of the most secure platforms to run a website. Of course, there are steps to take to make sure your site remains secure and free of malware and hackers. The basics include making sure you have strong, unique passwords for not just your WordPress admin area, but also for FTP (file transfer protocol) accounts, hosting accounts, and your emails connected to your site’s domain. Also, install security and backup plugins, which will allow you to closely monitor your site and help restore it if something does go wrong.
